Mudslides Mt Shasta - Canie - 09-21-2014
A Glacier has apparently broken off at Mt Shasta and is causing mudflows and has affected at least one highway.

The weather service's Medford, Oregon, office, reported Saturday that a glacier on Mt. Shasta broke, releasing a high volume of volcanic mud, rocks and water. The glacier-induced mudflow flooded Mud and Pilgrim creeks just north of Highway 89 where the water was dammed up Saturday night, the weather service said....

I hope Penny is not affected. I'm not sure exactly where she lives. And I just realized the town of Weed is nearby, which had a bad wild fire just recently. I thought it was on the Oregon border.
Maybe she'll check in for us.
I never realized lahars could happen without active volcanism.

As some of you know, I live in Mt. Shasta. So far, no road closures...but makes us more aware (and nervous). Our little town of Weed (about 4 miles away) just had a horrible fire---burned over 100 homes. The drought has been particularly horrible here.

Yes Brian---we have had several floods from nonvolcanic activity! The glaciers partly melt, the water gets jammed up on the mountain until something breaks. Happened in 1924 and again in the late 1990s (forget the date!). This one bears watching. The fire in Weed was much too close for comfort, especially since we were off in Washington State during this time! We're ok---if our well holds out!

good you are OK. Heavy rain has already entered NW corner of California and there is flash flood watch just north of you for heavy rain. Fire danger may be reduced at least.

We got almost three inches of much needed rain! Current thought around here is that snowfall on the mountain will possibly (probably?) provide the cover and insulation needed to settle the glaciers down for now. Haven't heard of major mudslides, but with the major damage wouldn't be surprised. Still hoping for more precipitation this winter.
